Nissan unveils new technology for X-in-1 electric drive powertrain

On March 9, Nissan Motor officially unveiled its new electric drive powertrain technology called X-in-1. Under the new technology, core components of Nissan's all-electric and e-POWER vehicle systems will be shared and modular. By 2026, R&D and manufacturing costs will be 30 per cent lower than in 2019.

With the "X-in-1" technology, Nissan will further enhance the competitiveness of its all-electric models and e-POWER models. Nissan has successfully developed a "three-in-one (3-in-1)" powertrain prototype with a modular design of the motor, inverter and reducer that will be used in pure electric models. In addition, the "five-in-one (5-in-1)" prototype further realizes the modular design of the motor, inverter, reducer, generator and accelerator, which will be applied to the Nissan e-POWER model.

Multi-in-one (X-in-1) technology enables three-in-one (3-in-1), five-in-one (5-in-1), and many more integrals that allow all-electric models and core components of e-POWER technology to share the same production line. The new electric drive powertrain technology, X-in-1, has the following advantages: Shared core components and modular applications increase production efficiency. Compared to 2019, powertrain costs can be reduced by about 30% around 2026, achieving the cost parity between e-POWER models and fuel models. Core components are reduced in size and weight, which improves vehicle driveability and minimizes noise and vibration. The use of heavy rare earths in newly developed motors has been reduced to less than 1%. The shared core components and control technology provide a pleasant driving experience unique to Nissan's pure electric models.

According to its long-term Nissan Ambition 2030 vision, Nissan plans to further strengthen its product lineup by introducing 27 new electric models by fiscal 2030, including 19 pure electric models. Nissan will launch the most appropriate models for different markets at the right time to bring the unique value of electric drive models to more consumers.
